Project Description

ETC has been selected by the highly competitive Innovation Fund Small Scale Call for the projects

For its project: MITIGAT Budget: 6.541.000 € EU contribution: 3.924.000 € Duration: 5 years – 2024 to 2029

An initiative of the European Commision: This project was founded by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency.

Project context

European industry is responsible for 20% of the EU’s greenhouse gas emissions due to 80% of fossil energy consumption. This dependence on fossil fuels is a major problem for EU energy sovereignty and climate change mitigation. It is therefore very important to note that 75% of all energy is consumed in the form of heat, while industry loses 36% of the energy it consumes in the form of waste heat (up to 70% with intermittent furnaces).

The project

Against this backdrop, Eco-Tech Ceram, one of Europe’s pioneers in thermal storage and waste heat recovery (SME phase 1 & phase 2), wanted to implement a multi-energies smart grid which responds to the dual constraints of intermittent waste heat and intermittent renewable energies. This hub combines heat storage, renewable electricity conversion to heat, power to heat and long duration energy storage. Located on an industriel site, the MITIGAT project aims to develop a platform capable of recovering 15 GWh/year of heat (90% efficiency), enabling a 60% reduction in natural gas consumption and the avoidance of 38 kt of CO2 in absolute terms over 10 years, at a cost of €6.541 million. MITIGAT will be the culmination of a 10-year R&D program, aimed at testing innovative technologies for recovering waste heat, storing it and extending its use on the power grid. This final stage will enable the technology to be deployed throughout Europe and in every heavy industry plant, creating strong economic activity, improving energy recovery and reducing CO2 emissions, making better use of renewable energy, thus contributing to the sovereignty of the European Union.
